In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars. The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time. They called it the greatest discovery in human history. The civilizations of the galaxy call it... MASS EFFECT.
Mass Effect is an RPG/FPS developed by BioWare exclusively for the Xbox 360. It takes the storyline, the characters, the worlds, the custom character creation, the side quests and main quests of the role-playing genre and seamlessly merges them with the fast paced action, weapons, and explosions of a first person shooter. Coupled with the squad tactics system it should leave all FPS/RPG fans extremely happy.
The plot revolves around Commander Shepard (you choose the first name in character creation), who can be male or female depending on how you design your character. You start the game aboard the SSV Normandy, when you get a distress signal from the colony of Eden Prime which was the Normandy's destination. A hectic communication showing the defenders of Eden Prime being heavily fired upon reveals a humongous ship of unknown origin.
The Normandy was going to Eden Prime with the goal of retrieving an ancient beacon left by the extinct race known as the Protheians, as well as the secret mission of scouting Commander Shepard as the first human recruit to the Specters (a group of several species that carries out the will of the Citadel Council regardless of the illegality of it). The mission then becomes a military op with the intent of securing the beacon. Commander Shepard and two squadmates are dropped to the surface and find a mysterious a.i. species known as the Geth are responsible for the attack.
The rest is for you to find out.
